Serengeti National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve is home to the world’s most spectacular wildlife migration. Each year, at their peak, about two million wildebeest; six hundred thousand zebra and gazelle make a spectacle as they move en masse – hyena and lion prides, cheetah and hunting dogs in tow – between northern & eastern Serengeti plains and the Maasai Mara Game Reserve in the north. This movement is triggered by the quest for fresh grass, as the rain patterns dictate. Near the end of the long rains in June the Serengeti plains’ grass is nearly depleted so the northward journey is a must. The migration will stay in the Maasai Mara until late October/ early November when the southward return to the Serengeti takes place following the arrival of the short rains. Between December and March the migration is concentrated in Serengeti and western Ngorongoro with January and February being calving season for the wildebeest. April to June has the highest animal concentration in the Serengeti.
Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater
Breakfast and departure for Ngorongoro Crater with picnic lunch boxes. Game viewing until late afternoon. Ascent to the crater rim for dinner and overnight at Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge.
Ngorongoro Crater, one of the wonders of the world, is a 600m deep caldera, 300sqkm ‘amphitheatre’ providing a habitat for over twenty thousand resident animals. They include wildebeest, gazelle, zebra, buffalo, hippo, hyena, lion, birds and a small number of black rhino. One of the crater’s features is the alkaline Lake Magadi which in the dry season feeds flocks of flamingo.
Day 7: Tarangire
Breakfast followed by departure for Tarangire National Park with picnic lunch boxes for full day game drive.
Dinner & overnight at Tarangire Safari Lodge.
Tarangire National Park is famous for its large elephant population, baobab trees spread and a dry season animal migration arena. This takes a ‘mini Serengeti’ likeness made up of wildebeest, zebra, elephant, buffalo and other mammals. In the dry season (July to end of October) they are concentrated along the Tarangire River and at the start of the short rains the wildebeest and zebra head off away from the park. By April / May the park is almost empty of the animals. From early June to August they are back in Tarangire.
